Milan — Lindsey Vonn shared her first message on social media following a severe accident during her race at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The Olympic skier thanked British sports commentator Dan Walker for his kind words about her strength and resilience after she suffered a leg fracture in a harrowing crash.
On Sunday, the hospital treating Vonn announced she sustained a fractured leg from “a nasty fall” during the women’s downhill event in Cortina. After her accident, she was quickly airlifted to the Codivilla Polyclinic and then transferred to Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso for surgery to stabilize her injury.
At 41, Vonn made a remarkable return to skiing after recovering from a ruptured ACL sustained just a week before the Olympics. Although she wore a knee brace for support, she lost control early in the race after clipping a flag. She fell and hit her head but remained responsive.
“She’ll be OK, but it’s going to take time,” said Anouk Patty, chief of sport for U.S. Ski and Snowboard. “This sport is brutal. Spectators need to remember that these athletes are descending mountains at high speeds.”
