LANDOVER, Md. — The Detroit Lions have a unique streak: they don’t lose back-to-back games. Coach Dan Campbell made sure that tradition continued by taking control of the offense himself during a recent game.
Jared Goff shined under Campbell’s guidance, throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns. Jahmyr Gibbs also had an impressive day, scoring three times and rushing for 142 yards. This resulted in a strong 44-22 victory over the Washington Commanders, even with President Donald Trump watching from the stands.
“It’s been a long time since he’s done it. … He was great,” said Goff, who completed 25 of his 33 passes without any interceptions. He connected with Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, who celebrated with a dance inspired by Trump, and Jameson Williams.
“Dan isn’t just a cheerleader,” Goff added. “He’s very smart.”
Trump’s appearance marked a significant moment in sports history; he became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a regular-season NFL game since 1978, highlighting the event’s weight. The Lions scored the first 22 points, showcasing their control over the game right from the start.
Williams commented on the game, praising Campbell’s leadership. “Shout-out to Dan and how he controlled the game,” he said, finding it amusing to see Campbell in reading glasses while calling plays.
Under Campbell’s leadership since his second year, the Lions have maintained a remarkable record. They haven’t lost two games in a row since a five-game slide ended in October 2022. Following a disappointing 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Campbell decided it was time for a change in the offensive strategy. “Let’s try something a little different,” he noted, hoping to find a better rhythm.
The Commanders, now 3-7, are struggling this season, having lost five straight games after a promising 12-5 record last year. Injuries have plagued them, with starting quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin both sidelined. Marcus Mariota stepped in to take the helm but couldn’t rally the team. Mariota reflected on the frustrations within the squad, saying, “Everyone’s frustrated, upset. Those are emotions you want to feel at this point.”
During the game, defensive tackle Daron Payne was ejected for unnecessary roughness after an altercation with St. Brown.
Both teams faced injuries: Lions center Graham Glasgow and cornerback Terrion Arnold exited the game, while the Commanders lost several key players, contributing to their ongoing struggles.
Looking ahead, the Commanders are set to face the Miami Dolphins in Madrid next Sunday, while the Lions will take on the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles that same night.
