BALTIMORE (AP) — C.J. Stroud led Houston to a stunning 44-10 victory over a struggling Baltimore team on Sunday. Stroud threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns, marking a significant win for the Texans, who matched the record for their largest road victory. Meanwhile, this was the Ravens’ biggest home loss in franchise history.
The Ravens, now 1-4, were significantly impacted by injuries. They played without two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, as well as key defenders Kyle Hamilton, Roquan Smith, and Marlon Humphrey, who were all sidelined. Baltimore had already been dealing with a tough season, compounded by the season-ending injury of defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike. The team also missed All-Pro fullback Patrick Ricard and tackle Ronnie Stanley.
In contrast, the Texans, now 2-3, outgained the Ravens 417-207, showcasing their offensive strength. Houston scored on their first eight drives, with Stroud completing 23 of 27 passes before stepping out of the game.
Cooper Rush, who took over for Baltimore, threw for 179 yards but was intercepted three times. The Ravens have struggled without Jackson, losing 10 of their last 12 games in this situation.
Before the season, many expected this matchup to be tough for Houston, especially since they had lost their last six games against the Ravens and hadn’t scored a touchdown in the last three meetings. However, that changed quickly; Houston drove 67 yards on their opening possession, scoring a touchdown thanks to Stroud’s pass to Xavier Hutchinson.
Despite efforts to establish a run game led by Derrick Henry, Baltimore couldn’t keep pace. They managed a lengthy opening drive resulting in a field goal, but ultimately, the Texans surged ahead. Stroud’s touchdown passes to Nico Collins and Hutchinson late in the first half put Houston firmly in control.
The Texans set a franchise record for points scored on the road, topping their previous record of 41 points. Meanwhile, the Ravens are left with much to ponder before hosting the Los Angeles Rams next week. Houston will rest before heading to Seattle for their next matchup.
In terms of the broader league context, teams often find themselves challenged when missing key players. Injuries have a significant impact on the game’s dynamic. According to a recent report from the NFL, teams without their starting quarterbacks lose about 80% of their games. This statistic underscores the challenges that teams like the Ravens face when reliant on backup players.
For now, the Ravens must regroup, while the Texans enjoy the momentum from this historic win.
