Let’s take a trip back to the year 2000, right before the excitement of the next Grammy Awards.

The big winner that year was Santana, with his song “Smooth” featuring Rob Thomas taking home Record of the Year. It won over hits from Backstreet Boys, Cher, Ricky Martin, and TLC.

In another highlight, Santana’s album Supernatural won Album of the Year, making it a remarkable night with eight Grammys in total. This tied the record set by Michael Jackson back in 1984 during his Thriller fame.

However, a significant moment that night was the competition for Best New Artist. Two former Mouseketeers, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, were up for the award after starting their careers on The All New Mickey Mouse Club alongside stars like Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling.

Christina Aguilera took home the award, adding fuel to the friendly rivalry between the two pop icons. They were up against Macy Gray, Kid Rock, and Susan Tedeschi, who was less known at the time.

The evening was filled with memorable wins. Cher snagged Best Dance Recording for “Believe,” while Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman” was awarded Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and Eminem’s “My Name Is” earned Best Rap Solo Performance. Whitney Houston took home Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “It’s Not Right but It’s Okay.”

Another interesting note: Destiny’s Child, who was nominated for two awards, still had all four original members present. Just a short time later, Farrah Franklin would leave the group. On stage, David Duchovny, known for his role in X-Files, humorously remarked that for once, the spotlight was not on him but on Jennifer Lopez in her iconic Versace dress.
