Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke in Assam, addressing some key points about his government’s achievements and criticisms of the Congress party. He emphasized that the BJP-led government is correcting the mistakes made by Congress, particularly concerning land encroachment issues affecting farmers and places of worship. He claimed that under his leadership, thousands of acres of land have been reclaimed from illegal occupants, providing a sense of justice to the local populace.
Modi also expressed disappointment over comments made by Congress about renowned Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika, a Bharat Ratna awardee. In a historical context, he referred to past grievances from the Chinese aggression in 1962, indicating that the wounds from that conflict still run deep for many in Assam.
During his visit, he unveiled projects worth ₹6,300 crore aimed at enhancing the region’s infrastructure and public services. Among these initiatives were the Darrang Medical College and a new nursing institution, which highlight the government’s push towards better healthcare. Notably, the Guwahati Ring Road project, stretching 118.5 kilometers, is set to improve connectivity in the region significantly.
In the broader context, Assam is currently experiencing rapid growth. Recent data suggests that the state’s economy is growing at around 13% per year, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing states in India. Economic experts have noted that such growth is crucial for improving living standards and boosting job opportunities in the area.
As Modi wraps up his tour, he leaves a mix of support and criticism behind, embodying the complexities of Assam’s political landscape.
