DUNKIRK, N.Y. — Recent cuts by the Trump Administration have removed $1 billion from U.S. Department of Agriculture programs that supply food from local farms to schools and food pantries. Many worry this includes seasonal food box giveaways, like the one at Chautauqua County Rural Ministry.
Bridget Majka, the executive director of the Rural Ministry, is deeply concerned. She emphasizes the urgent need for food assistance in Chautauqua County, stating, “We need to help the hungry people in our community.”
Local residents are feeling the impact of these cuts. Many expressed how vital these food boxes are for their households. Some even took the time to voice their thoughts directly to President Trump through the media. One community member, Orlando, lamented, “It’s very sad to hear that. That is gonna be cutting off all those programs to help us all." Another, Cynthia, urged, “Don’t cut us back because we need these programs to feed the families.”

Chautauqua County is responding to these challenges. The Cornell Cooperative Extension has launched food box distributions that will run through August. Some details include:
- Chautauqua County Rural Ministry Inc. provides boxes on Wednesdays at noon at their location on Washington Ave.
- Friendship Baptist Church starts distributions on April 2nd, continuing Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
- Jamestown Public Market will distribute food at two locations on Fridays at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
- Ripley Public Library offers 100 food boxes to the community on Saturdays starting at 10 a.m.
The necessity of these programs indicates a growing need for community support. As one local resident, Linda, put it, “It’s an important program. Everybody’s so happy to come and get this.”
