MARIETTA — Candy and Jeff Waite, who run the Gospel Mission Food Pantry, were honored with the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor award on Sunday.
This award highlights individuals who serve their communities with selflessness. It was presented at the 2025 Recognizing Excellence Awards Gala, organized by the Ronnie W. Davis Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5108.
The Gospel Mission Food Pantry has been serving the Lancaster Street area since 2011, when the Waites felt a strong calling to help others. Their pantry operates as a non-profit, relying solely on donations. They deliberately avoid governmental support to maintain their mission of spreading faith and providing aid.

The pantry provides essential items like food and clothing free of charge. “They depend entirely on donations,” Lyons added, emphasizing the model of charity established by the Waites.
Alongside the Waites, three others received the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor: Roy Sees, Bryan Reeder, and Robert Hockenberry. Before the awards, Bill Kaemmer, executive director of the Four Chaplains, shared insights about the historical significance of the award.

The gala also featured dinner from Wilky’s Sports Bar, making it a complete evening of celebration. Along with the Four Chaplains awards, new Kentucky Colonels were honored for their community service, including James Booth and Michelle White.
The night reflected a growing trend of recognizing local heroes. According to a recent survey by the National Philanthropic Trust, more than 75% of Americans feel that community service is increasingly important. Events like these not only highlight individual contributions but also inspire others to engage.
