FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – A woman in South Florida is making a real difference for a dog named Sweetie, who faced a tough start in life. Sweetie was found abandoned near a fire station, struggling and in bad condition. Thanks to the kindness of the community and rescuers, she’s now on the mend.
Grace, a good Samaritan, learned about Sweetie’s plight through a news segment. She decided to donate food to Saving Sage Animal Rescue, where Sweetie is receiving care. “I have a dog and can’t imagine her being hungry,” Grace shared. Her thoughtful gesture provided much-needed supplies for the animals at the shelter.
Sweetie, who got her name after a heartbreaking beginning, was discovered tied to a stop sign by firefighters. They quickly called in Saving Sage for help. “She was in terrible shape, completely matted, and clearly neglected for a long time,” said Thomas Borello, a rescue volunteer.
The team began grooming Sweetie and providing essential medical care. Despite her fear and trembling, she is slowly learning to accept love. “She hasn’t had peace in her life so far,” said Borello. “But with patience and care, we believe she can find a happy home.”
Sweetie’s story reflects a larger issue, as many pets are abandoned in similar ways. Just this week, two dogs were left at the shelter in the rain. Currently, the rescue is at capacity and struggling for supplies. “Anything to help these dogs is greatly appreciated,” Borello emphasized.
Volunteers work tirelessly to ensure every animal has the chance for a forever home. Sweetie is next in line for that chance. “She deserves a brighter future,” said Borello.
Statistics show that pet abandonment is a growing problem, with approximately 6.5 million animals entering shelters in the U.S. each year, according to the ASPCA. Efforts like those from Grace and organizations like Saving Sage highlight the importance of community support in addressing these challenges. Each small act of kindness can create significant change, one animal at a time.
