SAN ANTONIO – A woman from Northside has stepped up to help her community during the government shutdown. She started a free overnight food pantry that’s quickly growing.
It’s a simple idea: “Take what you need, leave what you can.” This system allows families in need to put food on the table without any hassle.
Yesenia Vela, who launched the pantry, explained, “With the government shut down, a lot of people are struggling. Many rely on SNAP benefits, and without those, some are lost.” She felt the impact firsthand. “So many folks are working, yet they’re living paycheck to paycheck.”
Just a few days ago, inspired by a cousin from church, Vela decided to make a difference. She prepared her pantry, gathering essentials and perishables, and set them outside her home for anyone in need.
Leaving food out overnight, Vela makes it easier for those who might hesitate to ask for help. “I know there are many who don’t want to be seen getting assistance,” she said. “It’s important we meet them where they are.”
The ongoing court battle regarding SNAP payments has made the situation worse for many Texans, who are only receiving partial benefits. Vela shared stories from families she’s met, illustrating the harsh realities many face. “Some are living in hotels without food, and they’re working hard. It’s heartbreaking,” she reflected.
Despite the challenges, Vela has found a deeper appreciation for what she has. “I used to take things for granted,” she admitted, “but now I just want to help others.”
Although this shutdown has been prolonged, Vela is committed to keeping her food pantry open as long as possible. It’s a testament to community strength and compassion in tough times.
