MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Food Bank is feeling the love from the community. After Director Laura Keith shared that food supplies were running low, businesses, individuals, and local groups rallied to help. “It’s been wonderful. The community really cares,” Keith said. “They’re bringing in exactly what we need.”
Local banks, the hospital, and many businesses held food drives. Even the fourth and fifth graders from R.B. Wright Elementary took part. They collected food throughout November and helped pack donations. Teacher Anita Spradley noted, “This teaches them the value of serving others.” The students also supported the Humane Society and Serenity House, but their contributions to the food bank were significant.
Volunteer Lisa Schohl saw a noticeable increase in donations. “It’s great to see more people getting involved,” she said. As the holiday season approaches, the food bank is busier than ever, often with long lines of cars waiting for food. Keith emphasized that the food bank is crucial for many families who rely on it for their next meal. “We’re the only lifeline for those in need here,” she stated.
Residents can access the food bank by filling out a simple application, as long as they live in Colquitt County. They can get food once every 30 days, with enough supplies for five days. However, Keith explained, “If we allowed more frequent visits, we’d run out too quickly.”
The food bank welcomes all donations, whether it’s fresh vegetables, canned goods, or other staples. Specifically, they are in need of shelf-stable milk, peanut butter, soup, and macaroni and cheese. Keith pointed out that some essential items are hard to come by. “We can’t even find enough soup on the shopping list from larger food suppliers,” she said.
For those wishing to help further, the food bank provides options for monetary donations and volunteering through their website at colquittfoodbank.org. The food bank operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and on the first Saturday of the month.
Several organizations in the area are also collecting food:
- United Way drop-off points are located at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Library and the Doerun Municipal Library.
- The Chamber of Commerce can be found at 116 First Ave. S.E.
- Destiny Fitness is accepting donations at 300-398 10th St. S.E.
Community spirit shines brightly in Moultrie. Research shows that food insecurity affects nearly 10% of households nationally, making local efforts like these even more vital. With the holidays approaching, it’s essential for everyone to lend a hand where they can. Every bit of support counts in keeping the shelves stocked and providing for those in need.
