Local Hewitt-Trussville Teacher Honored with Prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Education

President Joe Biden recently announced the winners of the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, along with awards for mentoring in these fields. Since 1983, these awards have recognized K-12 math and science teachers who inspire future scientists and engineers.

One standout recipient is Melanie Dimler from Hewitt-Trussville High School. She teaches AP Physics 1 and 2 and leads the Science Department. “Winning this award means so much to me,” Dimler shared. “It confirms that I’m on the right path. I love being a STEM teacher.”

Dimler didn’t start her career in education. She initially earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University and worked in the energy industry. However, her passion for teaching led her to obtain a teaching certificate after moving to Alabama. She began teaching physics in 2011 and later earned a Master of Natural Sciences through the Louisiana Math and Science Teacher Institute.

Dimler is especially enthusiastic about the Physics Modeling instructional approach, which she learned at a workshop at Arizona State University. This method encourages students to explore scientific and mathematical concepts through guided inquiries at the start of each unit, resulting in increased engagement.

Outside the classroom, Dimler is actively involved in student clubs. She sponsors the SWENext Girls in Engineering Club, co-sponsors the Science Olympiad, and advises the School’s Chief Science Officers. This year, students voted her as the teacher “Most Likely to Make a Scientific Discovery.”

Her dedication to her students and love for teaching make her an incredible role model in the education community.
