Food Drives Address Community Needs in Rapid City
Rapid City, SD, is seeing a surge in community support as local organizations launch food drives to help those facing food insecurity. With delays in SNAP benefits and paychecks for federal workers due to the government shutdown, many families are struggling to meet their basic needs.
Rapid City Area Schools kicked off its food drive recently, recognizing that more families require food assistance. Dr. Jami Jo Thompson, a spokesperson for the schools, emphasized the importance of supporting students and their families during these tough times. “Financial hardships affect every part of their life, including learning,” she said. Donations will be collected at all local schools and sent to Feeding South Dakota.
In addition, the Black Hills Area Council of Scouting America is launching its 39th annual care and share food drive. They work closely with Feeding South Dakota and involve community groups like college fraternities. Scout troops go door-to-door with yellow collection bags, and they typically gather over 30,000 pounds of food each year. Jim Miles, a senior district executive, pointed out that this initiative teaches young people about community service, encouraging them to engage beyond their screens.
Both the schools and scouting organizations share a mission to foster a spirit of generosity and service in the Rapid City area. “The community is very philanthropic, and we want to instill these values in our students,” said Thompson.
According to a recent survey by Feeding America, about 54% of food banks reported an increase in demand for food assistance. This alarmingly high figure highlights the importance of local efforts like these drives.
