Local Residents Turn to Foothills Food Bank Amid Rising Need for Food Assistance

CAVE CREEK, Ariz. – The Foothills Food Bank in the Northeast Valley is experiencing a significant increase in demand. Over the past few weeks, requests for food assistance have jumped by 33%. This surge is largely due to rising food prices and the halt of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Many SNAP recipients hoped to see their benefits renewed recently but remain in uncertainty due to ongoing legal issues. As a result, they’re turning back to food banks for help.

The Foothills Food Bank, which redistributes food from local grocery stores, is open to anyone in need, whether or not they qualify for SNAP. Leigh Zynodik, a representative of the food bank, mentioned an increase in younger families seeking assistance, particularly in areas along the I-17 corridor.

One client, Maria, shared her experience. “It helps me to subsidize what we don’t have at home,” she said, noting how food prices have surged lately. Many are feeling the pinch.

Community members like Judy are stepping up to help. “People can’t afford the cost of food. I want to give what I can,” she stated, expressing frustration over government decisions that affect vulnerable families.

Recent statistics highlight the growing issue. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity has risen to nearly 11%—a significant concern for communities nationwide.

Even with the governor’s announcement about working with the USDA to potentially restart SNAP, there’s no clear timeline for when these benefits might return. The uncertainty continues to affect many.
