Local Student Awarded Spot in Prestigious Leadership Academy at Drake University

Sadie Bonnette, a student at Ore City High School, recently attended the Donna and Darnell Pettengill Civic Leadership Academy in Des Moines, Iowa. This three-day program, held at Drake University, aims to inspire high school students to become ethical leaders and engaged citizens, showing them that they can make a difference even while still in school.

During the academy, students participated in hands-on workshops focusing on essential skills like leadership, communication, and stress management. They had the opportunity to meet with civic and business leaders, including a representative from United Way of Central Iowa. They explored the Iowa State Capitol and the Judicial Building, gaining practical insights into how government functions.

A lunch meeting with Drake University deans allowed students to interact with academic leaders, broadening their perspectives on education and leadership. Additionally, they volunteered at Meals from the Heartland, packing meals for families in need, which emphasized the importance of giving back to the community.

The program included sessions on personal branding and project planning to help students turn their ideas into reality. Evening activities fostered bonding among students from across the nation, allowing them to experience life on a college campus together.

Named in honor of Donna and Darnell Pettengill, the academy encourages students to see themselves as changemakers in their communities. According to a study by the Harvard Kennedy School, engaging young people in civic activities can lead to a 20% increase in their likelihood of voting and participating in community service later in life. This highlights the importance of initiatives like this academy.

Overall, the Pettengill Civic Leadership Academy not only equips students with vital skills but also shows them the impact they can create right now. This energizes a new generation of leaders dedicated to positive community change.
