An Indian astronaut is set to make history by landing on the moon by 2040, according to Union Minister Jitendra Singh. This exciting announcement came during a discussion about astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s recent space journey.
Speaking about India’s journey in space, Singh highlighted the reforms in the space sector that began in 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office. He noted that opening the space sector to private companies in 2020 has already boosted India’s space economy to $8 billion and is expected to reach $45 billion in the next ten years.
Future plans include an uncrewed mission with a robot named ‘Vyommitra’ in 2026, followed by India’s first human spaceflight, Gaganyaan, set for 2027. “By 2040, an Indian astronaut will walk on the moon, showcasing India’s ambitions,” Singh said. He believes this lunar mission will be a significant step toward achieving a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047.
The discussion took place amidst spirited protests from opposition members, and the session was adjourned without conclusion.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed pride in Shukla’s accomplishments, stating that such missions ignite passion for STEM careers in younger generations. He emphasized that Shukla’s journey not only advanced India’s space program but also allowed for real-life testing of systems vital for future missions. “This experience will help us refine our life-support systems for Gaganyaan,” Tharoor noted.
Shukla’s mission, conducted with international partners, further demonstrates India’s position in global space diplomacy. Collaborative efforts could enhance research and investment opportunities in the future.
As India looks ahead, the dreams of its space program reflect its larger ambitions. According to recent surveys, up to 70% of young people in India now show interest in pursuing careers in space-related fields.
