GCU Tops New Mexico in College Basketball Showdown
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a thrilling college basketball matchup, Grand Canyon University (GCU) secured a solid win against New Mexico, taking it 75-62. This victory came at The Pit, known for its noisy atmosphere and high altitude of 5,238 feet, making it a challenging place to play.
GCU’s head coach, Winston Gandy, praised his team’s early performance. “We imposed our will from the start,” he said. This win bumps GCU’s record to 6-12 overall and 5-3 in Mountain West play, placing them fourth among twelve teams in the conference.
A standout moment came from guard Chloe Mann, who scored 19 points after a tough game previously. Another impressive player was Julianna LaMendola, who finished with a double-double: 14 points and 14 rebounds. “I was calm at halftime because we were ahead,” LaMendola noted.
The Lopes had an impressive shooting night, hitting 51.8% from the field. They also excelled at the free-throw line, making 75% of their attempts for the sixth game in a row. Each player contributed, helping GCU dominate on the boards with a 41-32 rebounding advantage.
New Mexico had come into the game allowing only 62.4 points per game, making GCU’s offensive efforts even more impressive. The Lopes led by as many as 11 points at halftime, staving off a comeback attempt from the Lobos in the second half.
