Lopes Triumph: Securing the MW Regular-Season Championship – Grand Canyon University Athletics

Grand Canyon Softball Celebrates Historic Win

Fort Collins, Colorado — The Grand Canyon Lopes had a night to remember, clinching their first Mountain West Championship with a 10-5 victory over Colorado State. This win also came with a loss from Nevada, securing GCU’s place at the top.

With this championship, GCU earns the top seed for the upcoming Mountain West Tournament in Reno, Nevada. Their performance was a teamwork triumph, with every player in the starting lineup getting a hit. This is only the second time this season that has happened.

Senior Emily Gonzalez shone brightly, hitting two solo home runs. These crucial hits allowed GCU to regain the lead during the game. Last season, she showed her capability to perform under pressure, hitting well in postseason games.

Gonzalez now has 11 home runs this season, closing in on last year’s total of 13. Her 24 career home runs tie her for third in GCU’s Division I history.

Starting pitcher Natalie Fritz began strong, but Colorado State’s Jailey Wilson tied the game with a deep drive. Freshman Oakley Vickers stepped in to provide solid relief, striking out six batters, though she did allow a two-run home run later. Vickers boasts a record of 12-4 this season and leads the team with four saves.

As the game progressed, GCU’s offense kept pushing. Tinley Lucas and Addison Shifflett each added singles, followed by a walk to Ellie Pond, loading the bases. Junior Mackenzie Nolan seized the moment, hitting a single that drove in two more runs.

In the sixth inning, graduate Trinity Martin hit a triple, helping to push the score further. Lucas had a standout game, leading the team with three hits and is hitting an impressive .380 in the conference.

After Colorado State added two runs in the sixth, Jada Cooper responded with a two-RBI double, bringing her to a record 41 walks for the season.

While GCU has secured the regular-season title, there are still more games ahead as they finish the season. Currently ranked No. 30 in the RPI, the Lopes aim to bolster their resumes as the NCAA Tournament approaches in two weeks.

This historic victory not only marks a milestone for GCU Softball but also highlights their growth and potential as they look to make waves in the postseason.
