Lorde’s Bold Move: Departure from Universal Music Group Unveiled

Lorde is stepping into a new chapter as an independent artist. In voice memos shared with her fans on March 18, she announced that her long-term contract with Universal Music Group ended in December.

Reflecting on her journey, she noted, “I signed my first deal when I was just 12. I didn’t fully grasp what I was giving away.” While she has great appreciation for the people at UMG and the experiences they shared, she feels it was time to take control of her creative output.

Lorde mentioned she may sign with a label again in the future—possibly Universal—but for now, she wanted a clean slate. “It truly feels different. I sense a new openness and potential,” she shared.

Recently, she’s been diving into unique books and playing chess with social media star Addison Rae. Excitingly, Lorde is also preparing for her Ultrasound World Tour, which wraps up in 2026.

The shift to independence mirrors a larger trend in the music industry where artists seek more control over their work. A recent survey found that 65% of musicians prefer independent contracts for the creative freedom they offer. This movement reflects a growing awareness about artists’ rights and the desire to maintain ownership of their art.
