The Los Angeles Chargers recently made headlines by releasing five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa. This decision comes just before a roster bonus deadline when Bosa was set to receive over $12 million. By letting him go now, the team frees up $25.36 million in salary cap space.
Joey Bosa was the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He quickly made a name for himself, registering over five sacks in eight of his nine seasons with the Chargers. The 29-year-old defensive standout was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 and currently ranks second in the franchise’s history with 72 sacks, just behind Leslie O’Neal who has 105.5.
In 2020, Bosa signed a five-year contract extension worth $135 million. However, injuries have plagued his recent seasons. He missed 23 games over the last three years, contributing only 14 sacks during that time. In 2024, Bosa totaled 22 tackles, five sacks, and two forced fumbles. Luckily for the Chargers, Khalil Mack and others tried to fill the gap left by Bosa’s injuries, with Mack’s future still uncertain as he hits free agency soon.
The Chargers had a successful regular season with an 11-6 record but were eliminated by the Texans in the wild-card playoffs. With new head coach Jim Harbaugh entering his second season, the team now boasts over $65 million in salary cap space and is looking to bolster its roster.
As the Chargers prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft, they hold the 22nd overall pick. Replacing Bosa will likely be a top priority as he enters free agency for the first time in his career.
