January 20, 2025 (San Diego’s East County) – If you’ve lost food due to a power outage or a natural disaster, CalFresh is here to help. You can get up to a month’s worth of benefits to replace spoiled food, but you need to apply within 10 days of the incident.
This is especially helpful for those in rural East County, where power outages have become common. SDG&E has had planned outages to prevent wildfires, but other factors can also cause power interruptions.
To qualify for replacement benefits, make sure your situation matches one of the following:
- A power outage that lasted longer than four hours
- Utilities were turned off for any reason
- Your freezer or refrigerator stopped working

You can submit your form in a few ways:
- Walk it into your local Health and Human Services office
- Contact a local CalFresh Application Assistance Provider at SDHunger.org
- Submit it online at GetCalFresh.org
