Good news for sports fans in Louisiana! The state will still offer sales tax exemptions for K-12 school sports tickets and nonprofit fundraising events in 2025.
Recently, a lot of changes were made to tax laws, which caused some confusion about whether nonprofits and public school sports teams would have to start charging sales tax on admission and parking tickets this year. However, Revenue Secretary Richard Nelson clarified that charging sales tax for these events was not the plan.
In a bulletin from January, Nelson assured that the exemptions would continue despite any confusion. He acknowledged that with so many changes, some mistakes might happen. “Given the scale of these changes, technical oversights are inevitable,” he noted.
Last year, lawmakers passed a tax package that lowered the income tax rate but increased the sales tax and expanded its application to new goods. Many of these changes took effect on January 1.
Rep. Julie Emerson from Carencro mentioned that lawmakers are likely to introduce a bill this year to clarify the rules and ensure the exemptions stay permanent.
Even if they don’t pass a new bill, Nelson confirmed that the sales tax exemptions will remain valid throughout 2025. The regular legislative session kicks off in April, so we’ll see what happens.
