Indian flagged vessel “Jag Vikram” is set to arrive in Kandla, Gujarat, carrying 20,400 metric tonnes of LPG. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways announced that it crossed the Strait of Hormuz on April 11, 2023, with 24 seafarers aboard.
This journey marks a significant moment for India, as it is the first Indian ship to navigate this crucial route post a 14-day ceasefire between the US and Iran. This ceasefire aims to reduce tensions and ensure safe maritime trade.
Additional Secretary Mukesh Mangal provided reassurances during an inter-ministerial briefing. He stated that there have been no incidents involving Indian vessels in the region recently. In fact, over 2,177 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated, including 93 in just the last day.
The Ministry is dedicated to the welfare of its seafarers and is actively ensuring smooth maritime operations. They’ve been working closely with the Ministry of External Affairs and other maritime stakeholders to maintain operations at Indian ports, reporting no congestion.
The arrival of the Jag Vikram is particularly important as nearly 90% of India’s LPG imports come from Gulf nations.
According to a recent report by the International Energy Agency, global LNG markets continue to tighten, making this shipment even more crucial for India’s energy security.
