Los Angeles Lakers faced a tough defeat against the Phoenix Suns, losing 125-108 and ending their impressive seven-game winning streak. Luka Doncic took responsibility for the loss, citing his nine turnovers as a major factor. “That was my fault,” he said. “No way I can have nine turnovers in a game.”
Doncic had a strong start, scoring 20 points in the first quarter, similar to his performance in recent games. However, the game turned when the Suns outscored the Lakers 35-21 in the second quarter. Doncic admitted that the Suns’ defensive approach confused him. “They were trying to let me score instead of creating for others,” he noted.
His nine turnovers tied his career high and were the most live-ball turnovers by any player this season, according to ESPN Research. All nine led to easy points for the Suns.
Lakers coach J.J. Redick highlighted Suns center Mark Williams as a key to their defensive success. Williams’s physical presence made it hard for the Lakers to execute their plays. “He’s got the second-highest standing reach in the NBA, which affected our shooting and passing lanes,” Redick explained.
Despite Doncic’s 38 points, the Lakers struggled with turnovers that turned into fast-break points for Phoenix, who dominated that area 28-2. LeBron James, who scored 10 points, commented on the loss: “You can’t turn the ball over that much against a disruptive defense.”
The Lakers currently hold a record of 15-5, but upcoming games against tough opponents in Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia will test their resilience. “We need to look at everything—rotations, schemes—to improve moving forward,” Redick said.
As for the Suns, they were led by Dillon Brooks and Collin Gillespie, who scored 33 and 28 points, respectively. Their ability to capitalize on turnovers has been a significant part of their recent success.
In today’s NBA, turnover rates can drastically change a game. According to a recent survey, teams that control the ball and minimize turnovers win nearly 75% of the time. It’s essential for players to adapt and rethink their strategies against varying defensive styles.
This defeat serves as a reminder for the Lakers to refine their gameplay as they move deeper into the season.
