Bowie State University just received a remarkable $50 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This donation is the largest in the university’s 160-year history. Scott, who was previously married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, aims to give away most of her $42 billion fortune.
This isn’t Scott’s first significant donation to Bowie State. She also contributed $25 million in 2020, showing her ongoing commitment to supporting historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
University President Aminta Breaux expressed her overwhelming joy upon hearing the news. “I was truly at a loss for words. It brought tears to my eyes,” she said. This money will primarily support student financial aid, a crucial resource considering that Bowie State is one of the most affordable universities, with tuition and fees around $8,999 annually.
Breaux highlighted the importance of the donation: “We serve some of the highest-need students. This gift will help close the financial gaps for them.” Part of the funds will also aid research efforts at the university.
Scott’s philanthropy is noteworthy. Over the past few years, she has given more than $400 million to various HBCUs, including Howard University and Morgan State University. Breaux noted, “This gift empowers us to expand access, elevate our research, and uplift generations of students.” Higher education is seen as a critical path to social mobility for many students and their communities.
Brent Swinton, vice president for philanthropic engagement at Bowie State, emphasized that this gift could inspire more support for their students and faculty. “When Bowie State thrives, our whole community thrives with us,” he said.
Bowie State is historically significant, ranking 11th among over 100 HBCUs and founded back in 1865. The institution has evolved over the years, changing its name and becoming part of the University System of Maryland in 1988. Today, it offers 29 undergraduate majors, 20 master’s programs, three doctoral programs, and 20 certificate programs.
Studies indicate that support for HBCUs is increasingly vital. A recent report showed that students from these institutions often face more significant financial barriers yet bring immense value to their communities. With Scott’s generous funding, Bowie State is well-positioned to continue making a positive impact on many lives.
