French President Emmanuel Macron recently commented on an oil tanker immobilized off the French Atlantic coast. He claimed the vessel was involved in “very serious wrongdoings” and linked it to Russia’s shadow fleet, which is circumventing Western sanctions amid the conflict in Ukraine.
Last week, the tanker was spotted off Denmark’s coast. European naval experts noted it might have connections to drone flights over the country. In response, French naval forces boarded the ship at the request of local prosecutors, who are investigating the crew’s lack of cooperation and the ship’s unexplained nationality.
As part of this ongoing investigation, the tanker is restricted from leaving the area. French authorities provided the crew with basic supplies during their time aboard. The ship had departed from Russia’s Primorsk oil terminal on September 20 and has been anchored near Saint-Nazaire since last Sunday.
At a summit in Copenhagen, Macron expressed approval of the French intervention, saying proactive measures are essential when dealing with such incidents. Though he didn’t offer specific details, he emphasized the serious nature of the crew’s actions.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also addressed concerns about the shadow fleet, stating, “We are facing many challenges.” She noted that such vessels have operated in the Baltic Sea for an extended period, and countries are collaborating to tackle the issue.
The situation has historical roots. Recently, a Russian oil tanker named Eagle S garnered attention after it was suspected of cutting an undersea cable crucial to Finland. Investigative reports revealed this incident was part of a broader pattern. Russian oil companies are reportedly using complex structures to conceal their ownership of tankers, a strategy to evade sanctions.
NATO has recognized the threat posed by the shadow fleet. In response to recent events, they launched “Baltic Sentry”—a mission deploying ships and planes to monitor these vessels and protect underwater infrastructure. Since the initiative began, no further cable-cutting incidents have been reported, showcasing the importance of vigilance in these waters.
The financial implications of the shadow fleet are significant. It is estimated that they contribute tens of billions of euros to Russia’s budget and finance a considerable portion of its military operations. A particular tanker, known as “Pushpa” or “Boracay,” which has had multiple name changes, is registered under the flag of Benin and features on the EU’s sanctions list.
Overall, incidents like this highlight the broader challenges countries face in dealing with maritime security and the ongoing repercussions of international conflicts.
