MADISON, Wis. – Grocery stores aren’t the only places feeling the pinch from rising egg prices; food banks are also facing challenges in meeting needs.
Eggs have always been a staple at food pantries. Before the current price hikes, they were already in high demand. Ian Steele from Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin notes, “They’re very popular, always requested, but infrequently donated, and now they’re really expensive.”
In just six months, the cost of eggs has jumped about 66% for food banks. Steele explained that staff have spent a lot of time sourcing eggs, which takes away from their ability to focus on other food donations.
Meghan Sohns from WayForward Resources added that losing funds from the American Rescue Plan Act has made things tougher. They now pay between $10 to $25 for a case of eggs, which makes it hard to provide nutritious food for vulnerable communities like children and seniors.
Without access to nutritious food, health equity becomes an issue, Sohns said. Eggs provide essential protein and nutrition, which is crucial for the people they serve.
To adapt, they are exploring alternatives like using applesauce or yogurt as egg substitutes. However, this may come at the cost of losing some of the nutritional benefits.
Both organizations report a growing demand for food assistance. They emphasize the need for community support to continue serving those in need.
