Madras High Court Urges Central Government to Resolve Citizenship Case of Woman Born to Sri Lankan Parents

Chennai: The Madras High Court has requested the Central government to make a decision on a case involving a woman seeking Indian citizenship. This woman, Ramya, was born to Sri Lankan parents who moved to India during the 1984 civil war.

Ramya lives in Coimbatore. She says her parents fled Sri Lanka without any documents and lived in Chennai until 2019, after which they settled in Coimbatore. In her petition, she explained the challenging situation her family faced due to their undocumented status.

Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy heard arguments from both Ramya and the government representatives. Ramya shared her frustrating experience during the COVID-19 pandemic when she tried to get citizenship online. She was informed that foreigners need visas to stay in India. Additionally, her voter ID and other documents were requested, which led her to seek proper citizenship.

Ramya believes she is entitled to Indian citizenship, as she was born in India and has a birth certificate to prove it. She completed her education in Coimbatore and even got married there.

The advocate for the central government, Rabu Manohar, asked the judge for more time to respond to her petition. The judge granted this request and has now scheduled the next hearing for March 17, asking the Home and External Affairs ministries to provide their input.
