MAFS Backup Groom Opens Up: Why He Believes Awhina Deserves So Much More

For the first time in Married At First Sight history, the show is introducing a new twist: backup options for the couples. During Final Test Week, cast members meet their “Plan B matches”—individuals they could have been paired with originally. This gives them a chance to see if other connections may be stronger before the Final Vows.

One surprising revelation is from Tim King, who shared with Yahoo Lifestyle that he was initially set to be one of the main grooms this season. He explains that he received a call in late June about being on the show, just weeks before marriage. “It happened really fast,” he recalls.

Tim went through interviews, psychological tests, and even prepared for his wedding, only to find out that his original match had pulled out. After that, he took a trip to Europe but later learned that he might be a mid-season entry. While abroad, he discovered a familiar face in Lauren Hall, one of the participants. They had connected on a dating app about 18 months earlier but never met in person, although they kept in touch.

Tim reached out to Lauren for advice, and she warned him against joining the show. “She said, ‘Whatever you do, stay in Europe. It’s a mess here,’” he recalls. They both learned they could be matched as intruders, but weeks later, Tim was told he was no longer needed as the show’s direction changed.

Reflecting on how he would have fared with Lauren, Tim admits that he wouldn’t have been a good fit for her. He noted that her portrayal suggested a mentality different from his values.

After being cut from the initial cast, Tim was called back to meet Awhina Rutene. When they met, he made it clear he didn’t want to disrupt her current relationship with Adrian Araouzou. Awhina opened up about her struggles with Adrian, revealing feelings of being controlled and emotionally neglected. Tim took on a supportive role, prompting her to reconsider her relationship.

He expressed strong empathy for Awhina while watching the show. “I felt protective of her,” he said, referring to instances where Adrian’s behavior seemed harsh.

Although Tim hasn’t contacted Awhina since their meeting, he feels they share similar values and that a relationship might have developed had circumstances been different. He described Awhina as kind and caring—traits that are essential for him in a partner, making it clear that he admires her.

This season’s format shift has generated buzzing discussions online. Fans eagerly discuss the implications of backup matches, reflecting on how they might shake up dynamics in relationships. With reality shows evolving, staying in touch with viewers’ reactions is crucial. Reports also show that the popularity of these relationship shows has surged, with a Nielsen study indicating that reality television draws millions of viewers, particularly among younger audiences.

The mix of love, drama, and unexpected twists keeps audiences engaged, making Married At First Sight a show where every moment counts.
