A contestant from Married At First Sight recently stirred the pot with his desire for a “submissive” wife, calling it a misunderstanding. He’s part of a growing trend known as “trad wives,” which describes women who prefer traditional roles at home while their husbands take on the breadwinner duties.
Amber Basanovic, from Queensland, shared her journey on 60 Minutes. After feeling burnt out from her corporate job in a global makeup company, she decided to focus on her family instead. She joyfully spends her days making honey and believes that nothing compares to the satisfaction of supporting her loved ones from home. “You want to be a good mum, a good wife, but finding time for yourself is tough,” Amber explained.
Tyson Gordon, also from MAFS, faced backlash for his comments about seeking a submissive partner. He later clarified that he meant to express a desire for “traditional” values instead. He states, “I’m not looking for someone to ‘serve and obey’ me. I want my future wife to bond with our children.”
This new wave of traditionalism raises eyebrows among experts. Professor Heejung Chung from the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership warns this trend may set women back. She argues that such movements appeal to men seeking to reclaim a sense of masculinity. “Men feel they’ve lost ways of being masculine in a world where women are empowered,” she said.
Interestingly, recent statistics suggest a divide in opinions on these traditional roles. A survey by The Pew Research Center revealed that about 47% of Americans believe it’s better for women to work outside the home, while 43% value traditional roles, showing a societal conflict.
The rise of the trad wife movement may also stem from a nostalgic image of the past, which many experts argue is misleading. The idea that women in the 1950s enjoyed leisurely lives with time for baking and family gatherings overlooks the hard reality of household labor during that time.
Furthermore, concerning attitudes are emerging within younger generations. A study indicated that one-third of Gen Z men believe women should always obey their husbands. This finding poses questions about the implications of traditional roles and their effects on gender equality.
As discussions around these themes continue, it’s crucial to consider the evolving landscape of relationships and gender roles. While some embrace traditional values, the challenge remains to ensure any choices made are empowering rather than limiting.
