Major Break in Suzanne Morphew Case: Husband Charged with Murder After Her Mysterious Bicycle Disappearance

DENVER – Barry Morphew has been indicted on charges of murdering his wife, Suzanne Morphew, according to officials. This news comes from a grand jury in Colorado that voted to formally charge him.

Suzanne went missing on Mother’s Day in May 2020, during a bike ride. Her remains were discovered more than three years later while police searched in a different case, leading to a homicide ruling.

In 2021, Barry Morphew faced charges, but they were dropped almost a year later when the trial was about to begin. However, the new indictment has reignited the case. He was arrested in Arizona and will be extradited back to Colorado.

District Attorney Anne Kelly emphasized the ongoing dedication of law enforcement in pursuing justice for Suzanne. "We are committed to the Morphew family and the community," she stated.

Barry was reportedly the last person to see Suzanne alive. He told police she planned to ride her bike while he was away for work. However, investigators found her bike and helmet later in different spots near their home.

Suzanne had confided to friends that she was unhappy in the marriage and was thinking about divorce. A troubling text message from her phone revealed feelings of frustration, stating, "I’m done. I could care less what you’re up to."

Suzanne’s body was found in September 2023, near Moffat, not far from where she lived. Autopsy results showed she died from homicide “by undetermined means,” with several sedatives in her system. These sedatives are typically used to tranquilize animals, raising questions about their unusual presence.

Barry had a history of using these types of sedatives in Indiana, where he was a deer farmer. Allegedly, he used them again in Colorado shortly before Suzanne’s disappearance. Records indicate that he was the only resident in their area with access to this powerful mixture at the time.

Despite the charges, Barry Morphew has maintained his innocence. His attorney, David Beller, criticized the government for their approach, claiming they are improperly pursuing a predetermined conclusion.

The legal journey surrounding this case has not been without complications. Linda Stanley, the DA involved in the initial prosecution, was disbarred last year for misconduct related to this case and others. This fallout has raised concerns about how justice is pursued in Montana.
