A Texas court recently awarded over $2.8 million in damages against Theodore Knox, a former college teammate of Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice. This ruling stems from a street racing accident in Dallas on March 30, 2024, where both Knox and Rice lost control of their vehicles.
Judge Kim Bailey Phipps found Knox “grossly negligent” in the case, which didn’t require him to be present for the hearing. His court records show no legal representation, and attempts to contact him have gone unanswered.
Rice faces additional legal troubles beyond this ruling. He is involved in a separate lawsuit filed by Dacoda Jones, who claims he assaulted her multiple times from 2023 to 2025. Lawyers for Jones have struggled to serve Rice with this lawsuit, despite multiple attempts to reach him at his home.
While the NFL investigated Rice, they concluded on April 3 that there was not enough evidence to say he violated their personal conduct policy. In the meantime, Rice has switched attorneys for his street racing case.
The court’s recent decision awarded nearly $2.88 million to Kathryn Kuykendall, one of the crash victims. This amount includes compensation for medical expenses and lost earnings. Kuykendall’s attorney, Marc Lenahan, expressed that they are glad Knox has not repeated past mistakes, hoping he can prove himself in the future.
Knox was suspended from Southern Methodist University following the crash. Earlier this year, default judgments linked to the same incident awarded $1.99 million to Irina Gromova and $1.63 million to Edvard Petrovskiy.
On the night of the accident, Rice was driving a rented Lamborghini at 119 mph, while Knox was in a rented Corvette. Both drivers fled the scene without checking on the injured, an act captured on video.
In a follow-up to the incident, Rice took responsibility and turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued. He received a 30-day jail sentence and five years of probation. Knox followed a similar legal path, also getting 30 days in jail and five years of probation.
This dramatic situation raises questions about accountability in sports and public responsibility. Experts in social behavior highlight that players often face challenges in navigating fame and risky behaviors. The NFL, with its structured personal conduct policies, aims to instill a sense of responsibility among its players.
As public interest grows, this case could influence discussions around athlete behavior, legal consequences, and the impact of fame on personal decisions.
