Major Economic Shift: PGA Tour Cancels 2026 Sentry Tournament in Maui—What It Means for the Community

The PGA Tour recently announced that The Sentry tournament will not be held at the Plantation Course in Kapalua in 2026 due to severe drought conditions affecting the area. This course has hosted the prestigious event for 27 years.

In a statement, the PGA Tour mentioned they consulted various local leaders before making this decision. “Due to ongoing drought issues, water conservation mandates, and logistical hurdles, we’ve opted to relocate The Sentry,” they explained.

Maui is facing significant water shortages. A lawsuit was filed by Tadashi Yanai, the course’s owner, against the company responsible for maintaining the local water system, claiming it has led to severe restrictions. Reports indicate that out of 154 days before the lawsuit, they faced irrigation restrictions on 136 of them.

Recent statistics highlight the economic impact of this decision. The Sentry is known to generate roughly $50 million for Maui each year, benefiting local businesses and charities alike. In 2025 alone, it raised a record $747,704 for various nonprofits on the island, bringing its total contributions since 1999 to over $9.7 million.

Local officials have expressed their understanding of the Tour’s decision. Maui Governor Josh Green emphasized the importance of water conservation, stating, “Protecting our water and supporting our communities come first.” Maui Mayor Richard Bissen echoed these sentiments, noting the critical need for water resources.

The cancellation will also impact local charities heavily reliant on the tournament. Organizations like Hale Makua and Ka Lima O Maui often benefit from the influx of volunteers and donations related to The Sentry. For these nonprofits, the absence of the tournament in 2026 could be devastating.
