Upcoming Indian Railways Fare Hike: Starting December 26, 2025, ticket prices for Indian Railways will increase. The Railway Ministry has announced a fare rise of 1 paise per kilometer for ordinary class journeys longer than 215 km and 2 paise per kilometer for non-AC and AC classes on mail and express trains.
Fortunately, passengers traveling up to 215 km will not see any fare hike. For trips between 216 km and 750 km, the fare will go up by ₹5. Beyond that, increases will be gradual: ₹10 for 751 to 1250 km, ₹15 for 1251 to 1750 km, and ₹20 for 1751 to 2250 km. This change aims to protect short-distance commuters.
In Sleeper Class and First Class, the fare hike will uniformly apply at 1 paise per kilometer for non-suburban routes. For Mail and Express trains, the increase is set at 2 paise per kilometer across both AC and non-AC categories, affecting all classes, including Sleeper, First Class, AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and AC First Class.
Interestingly, this fare adjustment mirrors trends in other transport sectors where price hikes have been a common response to inflation and rising operational costs.
