This spring was full of promise for the Knicks, but they’ve hit a snag. OG Anunoby, who has been shining in the postseason, hurt his right hamstring during the fourth quarter of the Knicks’ 108-102 win over the 76ers.
He left the game with 2:31 left and didn’t return. Afterward, he wasn’t seen on the bench or in the locker room. Knicks coach Mike Brown observed, “He looked like he was hoppin’.”
Unfortunately, the full extent of Anunoby’s injury remains unclear. He sustained the injury while attempting a dunk, which was blocked by Paul George. He appeared to be in discomfort during that play.
Teammate Jalen Brunson shared his thoughts on Anunoby’s status, saying, “I’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. I don’t know too much.”
Before the injury, Anunoby was having a standout game, scoring 24 points, grabbing five rebounds, and making four steals. He was averaging 21 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in the playoffs, showing impressive shooting skills with a 59.4% success rate from beyond the arc. The team is outscoring opponents by 20.6 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor. Losing him for any time would be a big blow, given his role as a top defender and offensive asset.
Teammate Miles McBride noted, “He’s one of the best two-way players in the league, and it’s tough to replace that. Everybody’s going to have to step up.”
This isn’t the first time Anunoby has faced such challenges. Two years ago, he suffered a hamstring injury in a crucial playoff game, and the Knicks eventually lost that series after leading 2-0. Although he returned for the seventh game, he was not at full strength, and the Knicks hope this situation won’t repeat itself.
If Anunoby has to sit out, the Knicks might go for one of two strategies. They could either start McBride in a smaller lineup or play Mitchell Robinson at center with Karl-Anthony Towns at power forward. McBride expressed confidence about stepping up, saying, “I feel the coaching staff trusts me, I know my teammates trust me, and I trust myself overall. So if that happens, I know I’ll be ready.”
