After 29 years at MyMichigan Health, Dr. Lydia Watson, president and CEO, will retire on July 5, 2026. She’ll pass the baton to Bryan Cross, the current chief operating officer, on March 29, 2026. Dr. Watson’s journey in healthcare began humbly; she was inspired to become a doctor as a fourth-grader earning her first aid badge in Girl Scouts.
She pursued her dream, completing undergraduate and medical degrees at Wayne State University. Dr. Watson also served six years in the Army National Guard, gaining invaluable experience as she honed her skills in obstetrics and gynecology at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland.
Throughout her career, Dr. Watson delivered care to countless women. Her roles evolved from hands-on patient care to administrative leadership. At MyMichigan, she emphasized safety and open communication, encouraging staff to voice concerns and contribute ideas. One of her key achievements was overseeing the acquisition of additional medical facilities, which expanded services for surrounding communities.
Dr. Watson is also committed to mental well-being. Under her guidance, MyMichigan Health introduced initiatives to support work-life balance for employees. Recently, she played a pivotal role in moving Central Michigan University’s Medical School to MyMichigan’s campus, enhancing learning opportunities in the region.
Her impact extends beyond healthcare. Dr. Watson has actively volunteered with various organizations, including Shelterhouse, where as a medical director, she supervised nurses assisting survivors of assault. She has also served on multiple boards, advocating for community health and wellness.
Dr. Watson’s leadership has not gone unnoticed; she has received accolades, including the YWCA Woman of the Year in Healthcare Award.
As she reflects on her career, Dr. Watson shares gratitude for the opportunities she’s had. “If I could tell my younger self about the fulfillment of this journey, I would,” she says. Dr. Watson leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment, inspiring future generations of healthcare professionals.
