Major Retailer Set to Leave Target Stores by 2026: What Shoppers Need to Know

Ulta Beauty, the biggest cosmetics retailer in the U.S., has decided to end its partnership with Target. They announced this decision recently, stating that both brands agreed to conclude their shop-in-shop collaboration that began in 2021. This partnership allowed Ulta to operate shops within Target stores across the country and sell products online on Target’s website.

While a specific closing date hasn’t been given, the partnership will officially wrap up in August 2026. Until then, customers can still earn Ulta Beauty Rewards on their purchases made at Target.

Amiee Bayer-Thomas, Ulta’s Chief Retail Officer, highlighted the company’s mission to enhance beauty shopping. She noted, “For 35 years, Ulta Beauty has transformed how people experience beauty,” suggesting that their collaboration with Target was one way to reach customers nationwide.

Currently, there are about 600 Ulta shops inside Target stores. These locations feature a selection of beauty products available at Ulta’s standalone stores. The companies are committed to maintaining a smooth shopping experience until the partnership ends.

This shift from Ulta and Target reflects the ongoing changes in the retail industry. As consumer preferences evolve, brands are constantly reassessing their partnerships. Recent data shows a growing trend of shoppers seeking more personalized experiences. According to a survey by McKinsey, 71% of consumers expect personalized interactions from brands.

In today’s market, brands like Ulta are adapting to these changes. By ending collaborations that no longer align with their goals, they aim to focus on creating direct relationships with customers. As the beauty industry continues to grow—projected to reach $800 billion by 2025—it’s essential for companies to stay aligned with consumer preferences and habits.
