Major Staffing Shortages at Telugu University as New Academic Year Kicks Off: What You Need to Know

Kakinada: Sri Potti Sriramulu Telugu University is facing a leadership crisis as it lacks key positions like vice chancellor and registrar. This comes as the new academic year kicks off.

The university has deep roots. It was established by N.T. Rama Rao, a former chief minister, who introduced 35 traditional courses, such as Astrology, Dance, and Fine Arts. Branches were set up across several towns, including Rajamahendravaram and Kuchipudi.

After the state was divided, the university remained in Telangana. However, since 2019, the Telangana government has ceased funding, impacting its operations. Staff from Andhra facing promotion issues even took legal action, winning their case.

Two years ago, admissions were halted, and the last group of students completed their exams last May. Currently, only one contract lecturer remains at the Rajamahendravaram campus.

In light of this situation, students have urged the government to revive the traditional courses that N.T. Rama Rao championed. Recently, following input from local MLA Adireddy Srinivas, the Andhra Pradesh government has now taken control of the university. Meanwhile, Telangana has renamed its institution as Suravaram Pratap Reddy Telugu University.

Currently, the university in Andhra has just six permanent employees and a few others on minimal contracts. Notably, experts point out that no special recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) is required for Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, as it is already recognized.

The university’s Officer on Special Duty noted that the Andhra government is keen to revive it. Immediate steps include appointing an in-charge vice chancellor and reintroducing five traditional courses aligned with N.T. Rama Rao’s vision.

Financially, the university is in dire need of funds. Approximately ₹50 crore is needed for staff salaries and infrastructure improvements. This underscores the urgency for action as the university strives to regain its significance in education and culture.
