Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Heartfelt Attempt to Save His Daughter: Insights from Costa Rican Police Chief

A police chief in Costa Rica says that Malcolm-Jamal Warner was trying to save his daughter when he drowned. Chief Elberth León of the Tourist Police witnessed the scene and insists that Warner was acting heroically. He shared with Us Weekly that the Red Cross treated Warner’s daughter on-site and she did not need further medical attention.

However, there’s conflicting information from the Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency. They suggest that Warner was playing with his daughter at the beach when he went into the water with a friend. Tragically, a current pulled them under. The friend managed to swim to safety, but Warner did not.

A second individual, a 29-year-old man from Nicaragua, was also caught in the current while trying to help Warner. He was hospitalized but has since been discharged.

León expressed confusion over the agency’s account since they were not present during the incident. He pointed out that while Warner’s family was interviewed, they weren’t witnesses either.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically passed away on July 20 at Playa Cocles in Limon, Costa Rica, where he was vacationing with his family. His death raises concerns about water safety, especially in areas known for strong currents. Indeed, research shows that rip currents are responsible for dozens of drownings annually worldwide, emphasizing the need for caution when swimming in unfamiliar waters.
