Mali Tackles Climate Challenges: Key Insights from Morocco’s Oasis Congress

Rabat — Mali’s agriculture ministry is looking for fresh ideas to tackle its growing environmental issues. Fatoumata Coulibaly Traore, a technical advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, recently attended the International Congress on Oases and Date Palm. She found it eye-opening.

Traore shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I learned so much about protecting the environment.” The event, held in Ouarzazate, gathered experts worldwide to discuss sustainable farming in dry regions.

Mali is facing serious environmental challenges, like more frequent floods during the rainy season and intense heat. Traore highlighted that soil degradation is becoming a major concern. "These are real challenges," she stated. Despite the government’s efforts, she believes there is still a long way to go.

The congress offered valuable lessons from other countries. Traore noted, “We learned about solutions that could help us in Mali.” She plans to explore these ideas to see which ones can be applied back home.

The focus of the congress was on sustainable agriculture, particularly in oases, which is crucial for nations like Mali dealing with desertification and climate change. A recent report by the World Bank warns that by 2030, agricultural productivity in many African nations could decrease by up to 30% due to climate change. This makes the quest for sustainable practices even more urgent.

For Traore, the exchange of knowledge at the congress is a big step towards building a climate-resilient agricultural sector in Mali. “This direction brings hope,” she said.

The event highlighted how crucial international partnerships and knowledge-sharing are for countries facing similar environmental hurdles in Africa and beyond. Such cooperation can pave the way for innovative solutions to these pressing issues.
