Duke’s Rising Star: Rianne Malixi Makes Waves in Women’s Golf
DURHAM, N.C. – Rianne Malixi, a freshman golfer for Duke, is making headlines this spring. She’s climbed to No. 8 in the national rankings, showing off her talent on the course.
Hailing from Manila, Philippines, Malixi has an impressive average of 68.78 strokes over three tournaments this season. She’s scored four rounds in the 60s and finished a remarkable 20 under par across these events. Her standout performances include a victory at the Sea Best Intercollegiate, where she not only secured first place but did so in record-breaking fashion with a final round score of 9 under par (63). This round ties for the lowest 18-hole score at Duke and her total score of 16 under par (200) is the best in the school’s history.
In the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, she also made headlines with an 8 under par (63), finishing third overall with a 4 under (209). Her skill is impressive, especially for a freshman; she’s among only 15 first-year players in NCAA history to shoot a score of 63 or better.
But it’s not just individual accolades that define Malixi. She also played a pivotal role in the Old Barnwell Derby Match Play, where she went undefeated (3-0), helping Duke reach the championship match. With a combined score of 15 under par in those matches, her contributions were vital to the team’s success.
Duke’s roster is further bolstered by talented players like Katie Li (#46), Andie Smith (#73), Avery McCrery (#90), and Anna Cañado Espinal (#102). This group is creating a strong presence in women’s collegiate golf.
Looking ahead, Malixi and Smith will compete in the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur from April 1-4. Following that, Duke will head to the ACC Championship from April 16-19 at Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington.
Rianne’s journey is inspiring not just for her teammates but for young athletes everywhere. As she continues to excel, she demonstrates the power of hard work and determination in achieving one’s goals in sports.
