Mamdani Secures Landmark M Settlement for Bronx Tenants Against Landlords

Bronx Tenants Celebrate Legal Victory Against Negligent Landlords

In a significant win for Bronx tenants, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a $31 million settlement against the owners of Robert Fulton Terrace and Fordham Towers. This case highlights years of tenant complaints about poor living conditions.

Many residents described their struggles, including lack of heat and hot water, broken elevators, and infestations. During a recent press conference, several tenants expressed relief and disbelief over the settlement. One tenant poignantly remarked, “I shouldn’t be boiling water to bathe in 2026.”

Under the court’s directive, repairs and upgrades will start immediately. A chief restructuring officer will oversee these necessary fixes, and accounts held by the landlords will be frozen. Mayor Mamdani emphasized the importance of ending the cycle of neglect. “This is about shattering a time of abuse,” he said.

The two landlords, Karan Singh and Rajmattie Persaud, are also listed on the Public Advocate’s Worst Landlords list. The settlement includes $900,000 for urgent repairs, funds that should have been allocated much earlier.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson praised the outcome as a potential warning to other negligent landlords throughout the city.

Interestingly, many such cases are surfacing, reflecting a growing awareness and fight against landlord negligence. A 2023 survey by the Legal Aid Society found that 65% of tenants in NYC reported issues with heat and hot water, further underscoring the need for robust legal actions like this one.

As reforms progress, it signals a hopeful turn for tenants who have faced hardships due to inattentive landlords. “We need to ensure decent living conditions,” said tenant Denise Philip, who wants lasting improvements in her home.

This settlement not only addresses past grievances but also aims to set a precedent for better living conditions across the Bronx and beyond. For more insights on tenant rights and housing laws, you can check resources from the Legal Aid Society here.
