A man from Minnesota was arrested for pretending to be an FBI agent at a federal prison in New York City. Mark Anderson, 35, tried to convince staff that he had a court order to release inmate Luigi Mangione, who is facing serious charges for allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Anderson showed up at the Metropolitan Detention Center, but when asked for his credentials, he handed over a Minnesota driver’s license instead. He claimed he had weapons and insisted he was an FBI agent with official documents signed by a judge for Mangione’s release. However, the prison staff found his claims suspicious.
In his backpack, officers discovered strange items, including a barbecue fork and a steel blade resembling a pizza cutter. Prior to this incident, Anderson had moved to New York for a job that didn’t work out and had been working at a pizzeria.
Mangione, 27, has been in custody since December 2024 for allegedly ambushing and killing Thompson. He is charged with second-degree murder and multiple federal offenses, including stalking. Mangione has pleaded not guilty.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced plans to seek the death penalty for Mangione, citing the murder as an act of political violence. Prosecutors warned that he poses a danger because he’s believed to be inspiring others to embrace violence for political reasons. They noted that some supporters are now viewing violence as a legitimate means of political expression.
This troubling trend is reflected in recent surveys that show a growing number of people across the U.S. believe extreme actions could be justifiable in political conflicts. As of now, Mangione’s legal defense fund has received over a million dollars as supporters express frustration with the country’s healthcare system.
It’s a stark reminder of how rising tensions in society can lead to dangerous ideologies, and the importance of addressing these issues calmly and rationally.
