Manatt Boosts Health, Food, and Nutrition Services with USDA Expert’s Arrival

Cindy Long Joins Manatt’s Health Care Team

Cindy Long has joined Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, bringing her extensive experience in health and nutrition to the firm’s Health Care group. Previously, she was Deputy Undersecretary for Food Nutrition and Consumer Services at the USDA, where she managed vital nutrition programs. This includes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Child Nutrition Programs.

Long’s role at the USDA was significant. She crafted national policies for various nutrition assistance programs, ensuring they meet the needs of millions of Americans. Her leadership included overseeing a team of 1,800 and working on important legislation, such as the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This Act marked a major shift in how nutrition programs operate, a key element in the Obama-Biden Administration’s health initiatives.

Bill Bernstein, a leader at Manatt Health, noted that as health care regulations evolve quickly, Long’s expertise is valuable. Her experience in both government and the private sector makes her an asset for clients navigating complex health care and food system challenges.

Long has held various leadership positions, contributing to research and budget strategies over her career. She has received accolades like the Presidential Rank Award, showcasing her impact in the field.

“I want to help improve food security for communities that need it most,” said Long. She’s excited to work with Manatt’s dedicated team to promote access to healthy food across the nation.

Her addition comes as Manatt expands its talent pool across sectors, including digital technology, energy, and finance.

Long holds an M.P.A. from Princeton and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame.

As the focus on health and nutrition grows, Cindy Long’s insights could shape the future of food policy and improve access to nutritious food nationwide. According to a recent USDA report, nearly 10% of U.S. households experience food insecurity, emphasizing the urgent need for effective strategies in this area.
