TORONTO — Max Domi broke out of a long scoring slump, netting the game-winning goal with just over eight minutes left in a thrilling 6-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. This marked his first goal in 23 games, and he also contributed an assist, helping the Toronto Maple Leafs snap a frustrating three-game losing streak.
Domi skillfully bypassed Pittsburgh’s new player, Brett Kulak, to secure the win. This came shortly after Toronto’s general manager, Brad Treliving, publicly backed coach Craig Berube for the second time this season. “I fully support Craig,” Treliving said. “Rough patches happen. We all need to step up, but I believe we have a strong coach in him.”
Treliving’s comments followed the recent decision to fire assistant coach Marc Savard after two disappointing losses over the weekend. “Players share the responsibility, and we need to avoid blaming one person,” Treliving noted, suggesting the coaching change aimed to shift the team’s dynamics.
William Nylander had a breakout performance, scoring two goals and assisting two others, while Matias Maccelli and Steven Lorentz also found the back of the net. Bobby McMann capped off the game with an empty-net goal, securing Toronto’s third win this season against the Penguins.
The Penguins, unfortunately, have faced tough times, losing nine out of their last ten games. Bryan Rust, Rutger McGroarty, and Anthony Mantha score for Pittsburgh, but they struggled to keep pace with the Maple Leafs.
Nylander scored first for Toronto, ending a scoring drought of his own, but Rust quickly responded just 44 seconds later with a breakaway goal. Chris Tanev returned to the ice after missing 23 games due to injury, adding depth to Toronto’s defense.
In terms of stats, Toronto fired off 31 shots while Pittsburgh had 32. Maple Leafs’ goalie Joseph Woll achieved his sixth win in 11 starts, while Penguins’ goalie Stuart Skinner has struggled, remaining winless in three games and allowing 12 goals since his trade from the Edmonton Oilers.
Despite challenges, the Maple Leafs’ power play remains a pressing concern. Under Savard, they had the NHL’s worst power play, converting only 12 out of 90 opportunities. The team went 0 for 2 against Pittsburgh, highlighting the need for improvement. Assistant coach Derek Lalonde is now tasked with revamping this critical aspect of gameplay.
