(BIVN) – The USGS has announced that the Volcano Alert Level for Mauna Loa is currently at NORMAL. Recently, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory provided an update on this mighty volcano.
As of the March 2026 report, seismic activity at Mauna Loa appears steady. There were 116 earthquakes detected beneath its summit during February, compared to 123 in January. Most events clustered around Mokuʻāweoweo, while fewer occurred in the southern caldera. This pattern follows a trend of elevated earthquake activity seen in previous months.
GPS data indicates some changes at the summit, showing varying rates of inflation. This suggests that the reservoir beneath the volcano is refilling after its last eruption in 2022.
The Observatory also mentioned that measurements of gas and temperature from a station on Mauna Loa’s Southwest Rift Zone remain stable and within normal ranges.
Since 1843, Mauna Loa has erupted 34 times. Its recent activity has been closely watched, especially after the last eruptive event just a year prior.
