Margot Robbie Addresses ‘Wuthering Heights’ Casting Backlash: Here’s What She Really Thinks

Margot Robbie is speaking out about the backlash over her and Jacob Elordi’s roles in the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights. In a recent interview with British Vogue, she acknowledged the mixed reactions to their casting.

“I understand why people are concerned,” Robbie said. “There’s not much to judge until the film is released.”

This adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic 1847 novel features Robbie as Catherine, a character depicted in the book as a brunette teenager. Fans have criticized her casting because she is blonde and 35 years old. Elordi’s casting as Heathcliff also stirred controversy, as the character is described as “dark-skinned.”

Robbie defended Elordi, saying, “I saw him play Heathcliff, and he embodies the role perfectly.” She urged fans to remain patient, assuring them, “Trust me, you’ll be happy. He’s truly remarkable.” Robbie believes he holds the potential to be our generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis.

Emerald Fennell, the director, had her reasons for choosing Robbie. She described Cathy as willful and complicated, someone who can engage in cruelty while still being fascinating. “Finding someone with that star power is tough. Margot has that ‘big energy’ that Cathy requires,” Fennell explained.

Recent data from a film industry survey reveals that movie adaptations of classic literature often attract mixed reactions due to casting choices. However, new interpretations can also breathe fresh life into well-known stories, leading to more diverse representations.

Wuthering Heights is set to debut in theaters on February 13, 2026. Fans are eager to see how this new vision of the story unfolds and whether it will ignite the same passion as the original.
