Maria, filmed by Edward Lachman, won the prestigious Theatrical Feature Film award at the 39th ASC Awards held at the Beverly Hilton. This film, featuring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, received this notable accolade and is a contender for the Best Cinematography Oscar, which marks its sole nomination. Lachman will compete for the Oscar against talented cinematographers including Lol Crawley for The Brutalist, Greig Fraser for Dune: Part Two, Paul Guilhaume for Emilia Pérez, and Jarin Blaschke for Nosferatu.
The ASC Awards have a strong history, with the winner often going on to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography. This has happened 18 times in the award’s 38-year history, showing that recognition at this ceremony can be a strong indicator for the Oscars.
Hosted by Ed Helms, the event also celebrated various achievements in cinematography. Jomo Fray earned the Spotlight Award for his work on Nickel Boys, while the Documentary Award went to Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw for Gaucho Gaucho.
For television, Sam McCurdy won for his outstanding episode “Crimson Sky” from Shōgun. Robert Elswit took home the award for Limited or Anthology Series with Ripley, and Richard Rutkowski won for the Half-Hour Series category with Sugar, which stars Colin Farrell.
The ASC also recognized several individuals with tribute honors. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, received the 2025 Board of Governors Award, while Andrzej Bartkowiak was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Other recognized talents included Michael Goi, Joan Churchill, John Simmons, and Pete Romano.
