The Mariners have made a significant move by calling up infielder Will Wilson. He takes over the active roster spot from Brendan Donovan, who is out for at least ten days due to a left groin strain. Donovan’s injury has been a concern; he was also dealing with a right groin issue earlier in the season. There’s speculation that his current problem might relate to surgery for a sports hernia he had last October.
Before joining the Mariners, Donovan was a sought-after player this past winter, moving in a three-team trade that sent infielder Ben Williamson and two prospects to another club. His flexibility in the field made him a valuable asset. Now, with Cole Young performing well at second base, Donovan had been covering third. He impressively hit .304 with a .437 on-base percentage when healthy.
The Mariners will be without Donovan for at least a week. Instead of calling up Colt Emerson, who is still developing at Triple-A Tacoma, they have Leo Rivas starting at third. Rivas has faced challenges this season with a batting average of .143, although his career numbers are slightly better.
Will Wilson, 27, steps in as depth. His stats in the majors are limited; he played 31 games last year with a .192 batting average. However, his minor league performance has shown promise, especially with a .250 batting average at Triple-A in recent years. With options still available, he could return to Tacoma when Donovan and others recover.
Miles Mastrobuoni, another infielder, is currently on the 60-day injured list due to a calf strain. He had started a rehab assignment but seems to have encountered setbacks.
