Mariners Reinstate Bryce Miller: What This Means for the Team’s Pitching Rotation

Bryce Miller is set to make his season debut with the Mariners on Wednesday against the Astros, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. Miller has missed part of the season due to an oblique strain he suffered during spring training. The Mariners plan to start with a six-man rotation, which could later transition into a piggyback setup with another pitcher, Luis Castillo.

Injuries have hampered Miller’s progress in previous seasons. In 2025, elbow inflammation put him on the injured list twice. He returned but had limited success, making key contributions during the postseason after coming back in August.

This year, Miller’s injury opened the door for Emerson Hancock. Despite being a promising prospect, Hancock struggled in past seasons, ending each year with a 4.50 ERA or worse. However, 2026 has been different for him. Hancock has emerging as a surprising standout, boasting a mid-2.00 ERA and over a strikeout per inning before facing the White Sox. He did give up five runs in one outing but secured his third win.

As Miller nears his return, the Mariners face a critical decision for their rotation. Instead of bumping Hancock or the struggling Castillo, everyone remains in the mix for now. As Divish notes, without an off day until May 21, this six-man rotation allows players some much-needed rest.

Castillo’s recent performance has been underwhelming. After a strong debut against the Yankees, he’s allowed 24 earned runs over his last six starts. He now ranks low in key metrics like exit velocity and hard-hit rates. At 33, he may be experiencing a downturn in form. With a contract that keeps him with Seattle through the next few years, the team has a vested interest in helping him regain his form. The proposed piggyback arrangement with Miller could provide the support Castillo needs to improve.

In summary, the Mariners are navigating a challenging part of their schedule. With Miller’s return and Hancock’s unexpected rise, the pitching lineup is set for an intriguing few weeks ahead.
