Retired astronaut and current Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona recently celebrated an exciting announcement from NASA. They revealed that the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft found sugars critical for life in samples collected from the asteroid Bennu.
These sugars, glucoe and ribose, are essential components of DNA and RNA, the building blocks of life on Earth. Though the discovery doesn’t confirm life itself, it suggests that the building blocks of biological molecules might be widespread in our solar system.
Yoshihiro Furukawa, a professor at Japan’s Tohoku University, led a team of researchers responsible for this finding. He explained that with ribose present, “all of the components required to form RNA are available in the asteroid.”
On social media, Senator Kelly stated that these findings raise important questions about life beyond Earth and highlight the need for continued funding in scientific research. “When you consider the odds, maybe there is life out there,” he remarked, adding a touch of humor from his recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, joking about an alien encounter.
Astrobiologist Danny Glavin from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center also expressed optimism about the search for extraterrestrial life. He noted that these building blocks are not just limited to Earth but could potentially support life elsewhere, like on Mars or Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. “These components were everywhere, making life not just a possibility here but throughout the solar system,” he said.
This discovery reflects a growing trend in astrobiology, where researchers increasingly believe that the ingredients for life might be common in the universe. Historical studies, such as the discovery of microbial life in extreme environments on Earth, further support the notion that life might arise in unexpected places.
